Prototype Wilkinson Sword MOD Scotsman's Sgian Dubh Knife

This is a prototype Wilkinson Sword MOD pattern Sgian Dubh, believed to be from the 1990s.  Decades ago, WS had the existing contract to supply the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) with all of its ceremonial weapons and was asked to quote for the Sgian Dubh.  The correct design should have nickel-silvered mounts, but to keep the cost down in the development stage, 2 samples were made for MOD using white metal instead.  This is one of them.

The handle is resin with nickel silver studs.  The handle and scabbard mounts are white metal.  The scabbard is made from rawhide and hand-sewn (same principle as RN and RAF scabbards).

The blade has minor corrosion (very common on original WS Sgian Dubhs).

This knife is part of a collection of rare Wilkinson Sword knives, which we are selling on behalf of the former Production Manager of the Wilkinson Sword Swords Division, London.  It is held here in stock at Dartmoor Knife.

Sgian Dubh is from Scottish Gaelic, meaning "black knife". The "black" likely refers to the traditional dark wood/bog-oak handles or its historical origins as a concealed blade.  Historically, it was a multi-purpose utility knife (for preparing food, hunting, and general day-to-day tasks).  Today, it is an iconic accessory worn ceremonially as part of traditional Scottish Highland dress.  It is worn tucked into the top of the kilt hose (stocking) on the dominant-hand side, with only the decorative handle visible.
