Prototype Wilkinson Sword retail Scottish Sgian Dubh Knife

Original price was: £225.00.Current price is: £175.00.

1 in stock

This is a prototype Wilkinson Sword retail pattern Sgian Dubh, believed to be from the 1990s.  WS had an existing range of these on sale to the general public.  At some point, WS decided to bypass the retailers and try to sell directly by mailing all Scottish males who were coming of age!  This backfired massively.

The knife that was designed was a variant of the Lewis.  The mounts are plated white metal and need some TLC or replating.  The handle is based on the Lewis shape, but rather than being made from resin is hand-shaped from rosewood.  The blade design is from one of the other styles and has the typical Scottish thistle design.  The scabbard uses the plastic body but has been covered in leather and hand-sewn as a standard infantry scabbard.  Only 2 were made in this prototype. One was sold, and this is the other that was used for an exhibition.

The blade has very minor corrosion (very common on original WS Sgian Dubhs).  Only 2 of these samples were ever made.

This knife is part of a collection of rare Wilkinson Sword knives, which we are selling on behalf of the former Production Manager of the Wilkinson Sword Swords Division, London.  It is held here in stock at Dartmoor Knife.

Sgian Dubh is from Scottish Gaelic, meaning "black knife". The "black" likely refers to the traditional dark wood/bog-oak handles or its historical origins as a concealed blade.  Historically, it was a multi-purpose utility knife (for preparing food, hunting, and general day-to-day tasks).  Today, it is an iconic accessory worn ceremonially as part of traditional Scottish Highland dress.  It is worn tucked into the top of the kilt hose (stocking) on the dominant-hand side, with only the decorative handle visible.
